Wine List

There have been some exciting developments at The Table recently. With our new Head Chef, Cinzia Ghignoni, running the kitchen, we decided it was time to take our wine list to the next level.

We asked Matt Walls to help us develop something really exciting. A judge at two international wine competitions, Matt has built up extensive wine knowledge working with Champagne Bollinger and The Sampler, an award-winning wine merchant.

“I’ve put together a list that is varied, modern and interesting, but above all these are wines that pair perfectly with Cinzia’s food. It has been great fun working with everyone at The Table, especially since they were keen to experiment with new and exciting regions and grape varieties, not just the same old safe options. You tend to pay extra for famous names; real value is often found elsewhere. Although under-the-radar, the wines aren’t weird or wacky, and they are all available by the 125ml glass, starting from just £2.90, to encourage experimentation. I hope you have as much fun exploring it as I had putting it together.”

Sparkling Wine

Frassinelli Prosecco Extra Dry NV

5.70 23.90
Region: Veneto, Italy
Grape: Glera
Notes: Fresh melon, pear and apple. Delightful mouthfuls of soft fizz. This family-owned Prosecco house is based in the best area (Valdobbiadene) and has been making excellent fizz since 1966.

Champagne Gallimard

11.30 48.00
Region: Champagne, France
Grape: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
Notes: Utterly spoiling and luxurious, as Champagne should be. Soft, toasty and intense. Family-owned Gallimard owns 10 hectares of vines; unlike many Champagne megabrands, they grow their own grapes and make their own wine. Long flavours, perfectly balanced.

Coates & Seely

11.30 48.00
Region: Hampshire, England
Grape: Chardonnay
Notes: Made near Whitchurch. Vines grown on the same chalk as Champagne, with the same grape varieties and same methods. Cooler weather here, making a crisp, bracing wine. Like biting into a Bramley, and as refreshing as swimming in the sea. Very fine bubbles.

Adega de Monção Vinho Verde 2011

3.40 4.70 19.80
Region: Minho, Portugal
Grape: Alvarinho (a.k.a. Albariño) and Trajadura
Notes: Fresh, soft and floral. Light in colour and subtle in flavour but uniquely refreshing thanks to its spritz of tiny bubbles. Low(ish) alcohol (11%) so you can have a second glass without feeling guilty.

Valle dell’Acate ‘Case Ibidini’ Insolia 2010

3.50 4.90 20.60
Region: Sicily, Italy
Grape: Insolia
Notes: Dry and crisp. Citrus and fresh herbs; delicate and pure like a good Pinot Grigio but with bags more character and interest.

Stadt Krems Grüner Veltliner 'Rieden Selektion' 2011

4.00 5.60 23.60
Region: Kremstal, Austria
Grape: Grüner Veltliner
Notes: Light to medium in body but no lack of lemon and lime flavour. Some grassy and floral hints; aromatic and attractive. If you’re looking for a change from Sauvignon Blanc, try Grüner. Works well with seafood.

Sébastien Vaillant Valençay 2010

4.00 5.50 23.10
Region: Loire, France
Grape: Sauvignon Blanc
Notes: Valencay is 20km west of Sancerre, and they use the same grape variety. Zesty lemon, gooseberry and elderflower but with a softer, richer feel in the mouth than its rather serious neighbour.

Rainer Wess Riesling 'Terrassen' 2011

6.70 9.30 39.50
Region: Wachau, Austria
Grape: Riesling
Notes: Grown on terraced vineyards that snake along the Danube in Austria. Dry, fragrant, almost peppery aromas over lemon and mandarin fruits. So fresh it’s exciting to drink and makes you feel alive.

Domaine La Croix Gratiot Picpoul de Pinet 2011

3.70 5.10 21.50
Region: Languedoc, France
Grape: Picpoul Blanc

Baccaria Grillo 2011

2.90 4.00 16.90
Region: Sicily, Italy
Grape: Grillo
Notes: Indigenous to Sicily, Grillo often goes into Marsala production, but can make a good dry white wine too. Medium to full-bodied. Soft and caressing in the mouth, and smells of spiced peaches.

Shaw & Smith 'M3' Chardonnay 2010

8.30 11.50 49.00
Region: Adelaide Hills, Australia
Grape: Chardonnay
Notes: Beautifully balanced with a creamy texture like a fine White Burgundy. Classic stone fruit flavours with a hint of tropical fruit: papaya and pineapple. Impressively complex with spice, smoke and honeycomb on the long finish. Stunning and unforgettable.

Masseria Pietrosa Verdeca 2010

4.50 6.20 26.30
Region: Puglia, Italy
Grape: Verdeca
Notes: Full and silky in the mouth. Dry, but with a whiff of white chocolate and vanilla over the juicy peach flavours. Vines are grown in small bushes to protect the grapes from the gusting sea breezes. Proudly characterful and great with many different foods.

Herencia Altés Garnatxa Blanca 2011

3.90 5.40 22.90
Region: Catalonia, Spain
Grape: Garnatxa Blanca (a.k.a. Grenache Blanc)
Notes: Not too brash on the nose: white flowers and leafy herbs. But what a treat for the tongue, with a wonderful silky texture, all peaches and cream. When the long flavours subside, it ends dry and bright.

Mas Cristine Blanc 2011

5.10 7.10 29.90
Region: Roussillon, France
Grape: Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Gris, Maccabeu
Notes: This wine comes from 100 year old vines that tan themselves on terraces overlooking the sea. Attractive aromas like a box of flat peaches sitting in the sun. Full-bodied, soft, silky, but with a firm finish that leaves you wanting more.

Yves Cuilleron Viognier 2010

5.80 8.00 33.90
Region: Northern Rhône, France
Grape: Viognier
Notes: Full-bodied, rich, with a wonderful heady fragrance. Smells like it might be a little sweet, but is dry and spicy on the finish with a smooth and creamy texture. A delicious mouthful, and great value, especially in a top vintage like this.

Red Wine

.

125ml 175ml bottle

Pittnauer St Laurent 'Dorflagen' 2010

5.80 8.00 33.90
Region: Burgenland, Austria
Grape: St Laurent
Notes: One of the three red grapes indigenous to Austria, this distant relative of Pinot Noir has all of its ancestor’s mystique. Cherries, violets, autumn leaves but fresh, light and thrillingly pure. Gerhard Pittnauer is one of its finest exponents.

Cuatro Pasos Bierzo 2010

4.00 5.60 23.40
Region: Bierzo, Spain
Grape: Mencía
Notes: Spicy. Cinnamon and nutmeg infused cherries and blackberries. Light in body, but punchy with no-nonsense tannins and a long, zingy finish. Named after the ancient bear prints found in nearby rock when building the winery.

Torre del Falasco Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso 2009

4.80 6.70 28.40
Region: Verona, Italy
Grape: Corvina and Rondinella
Notes: Bright and perfumed nose, with ripe red cherries, vanilla, lilies, and violets. Its smooth, velvety texture and natural freshness makes this a very drinkable wine.

Agostino Pavia ‘Casareggio’ Barbera d’Asti 2010

3.40 4.70 19.90
Region: Piemonte, Italy
Grape: Barbera
Notes: Medium-bodied, dry and savoury, this is a very versatile red produced in the heart of Asti. The local trend towards small oak barrels that smother the fruit flavours has been wisely ignored by this grower. Black and red cherry, black olives and rosemary.

David Reynaud Crozes Hermitage 2010

7.30 10.10 42.90
Region: Northern Rhône, France
Grape: Syrah
Notes: Smoky, spicy and evocative on the nose, this is an electrifying wine. Classic Syrah black pepper and violets. Fruity, earthy and wild. Don’t blame me if you become captivated by its biodynamic brilliance. This is a hugely exciting producer, don't miss.

Reverdito 'Simane' Langhe Nebbiolo 2010

5.00 7.00 29.60
Region: Piemonte, Italy
Grape: Nebbiolo
Notes: Young and fruity, ripe red fruits and roses in bloom. Austerely dry, as you’d want from the Barolo grape, but ready to drink with a bit of red meat, especially veal. Reverdito are based in La Morra, the part of Barolo known for finesse and fragrance.

Castaño Monastrell 2011

3.10 4.30 17.90
Region: Yecla, Spain
Grape: Monastrell (a.k.a. Mourvedre)
Notes: Small but well-respected family winery in the up-and-coming region of Yecla, near Alicante in the east of Spain. Spicy, juicy and highly drinkable even if a big and chunky style of wine. Warm black fruits and licorice. Dry finish.

Mas Cristine Rouge 2009

5.10 7.10 29.90
Region: Roussillon, France
Grape: Grenache, Syrah
Notes: Bit of a wild one this. Untamed wild fruits, with an earthy, leathery side like an unshaven Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe. Full-bodied, juicy squashed berries, rich and natural-tasting.

Bodega Renacer Malbec Punto Final' Clasico 2010

3.90 5.40 22.90
Region: Mendoza, Argentina
Grape: Malbec
Notes: Powerful thick black fruits, smoky and a touch tarry. Retains a freshness - it’s light on its feet as a boxer. Just two months in French oak barrels mean that the fruit flavours are to the fore, not the oak. The flavour builds on the finish.

4.30 5.90 24.90
